Organizing a New Grange in Massachusetts

Strong local Granges begin with neighbors who want to make a difference together. Across the Commonwealth, community members are working to launch new Granges that support agriculture, strengthen civic life, and create opportunities for leadership, service, and connection.

The Massachusetts State Grange is actively supporting efforts to organize new community-based Granges and you can be part of bringing one to your area.

What Does It Take to Start a New Grange?

Organizing a new Grange is straightforward and community-driven. To charter a new local Grange, you need:

  • At least 8 people

  • Members must be age 14 or older

  • A shared interest in supporting community service, agriculture, youth engagement, and local leadership

Once a group is ready, the Massachusetts State Grange provides guidance through each step of the organization process, including planning meetings, officer preparation, and chartering support.

Why Start a Grange?

Starting a Grange creates opportunities to:

  • Support local agriculture and food systems

  • Strengthen community connections

  • Develop leadership skills for youth and adults

  • Participate in grassroots advocacy

  • Host educational programs and community events

  • Preserve rural heritage while building for the future

Granges are flexible and locally driven, each one reflects the needs and interests of its community.
